Local residents invited to participate in Ironman

Now in its ninth year, the 2007 Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid is the oldest official Ironman on the continental United States. The race hosts more than 2,000 athletes from around the globe, with 50 slots reserved for local participants. This years race will take place on Sunday, July 22. Residents of Lake Placid, Keene, Keene Valley, Upper Jay, Jay, Wilmington, Black Brook, or Ausable Forks are eligible to take part in the event as local entrants. People can sign up by e-mailing melody@nasports.com. Entry deadline is March 30, but Edwards encouraged people to sign up as soon as possible, since there are a limited number of slots available. Questions can be directed to Edwards at 518-524-1960. Race Director Jeff Edwards said the slots were saved as a thank-you to the communities. For the inaugural race in 1999, there were less than 20 local participants, but theres been a steady increase ever since. For those that dont want to put on their running shoes, other opportunities are available to participate. Volunteers are always welcome to help with the event, and can sign up via the Web site.
