PSU student to run the Rock'n'Roll Marathon

CHAMPLAIN Sara Hammel, of Champlain, has recently joined the Leukemia and Lymphoma Societys Team in Training with the intention of running the Rock n Roll Marathon in San Diego, Calif., on June 3. However she must first raise $4,000 for the society. About a year ago Hammel, frustrated by the weight she had gained, vowed to exercise and change her eating habits. She did reach her goals and began running several months ago in order to do so. Now with a new sense of fitness and energy levels soaring, Hammel has decided to head to the RocknRoll Marathon where she will run 26.2 miles, both for herself and for the cause. According to Hammel, 75 percent of the monies raised are guaranteed to go directly towards funding research, advocacy, education, and helping people with cancer lead happier lives. The fact that cancer is a disease that affects more than 107,900 Americans each year and kills 60,500, it is the utmost in motivation for Hammel, who works part time while attending Plattsburgh State University full-time. As a member of Team in Training, I am participating in a marathon on behalf of leukemia survivors and will raise funds to battle leukemia the #1 disease killer of children lymphoma and other blood cancers, said Hammel. How to help: There will be a fundraising event at Conroys Organics, Route 9, Beekmantown on Feb. 17 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be music, sleigh rides, free samples and a raffle of locally donated items. There will also be a donation jar and it's for the whole family.
