Gym on the mountain

Like many homeschoolers, 14-year-old Jamie Frederick enjoys a more relaxed schedule than her public school friends. Most mornings she crawls out of bed between 8 and 8:30. However, for the last two Wednesdays she has been up long before sunrise to get ready for her physical education class. She is not complaining though. Her class takes place on the slopes of Titus Mountain and she is finally getting to use the snowboard she received for Christmas. There are a total of 13 homeschoolers from all over Clinton County participating in Titus Mountains Homeschool Ski and Snowboard program this year. The participants are: Jessica Blake from Saranac, Gabby and Abigail DAntonio from Dannemora, Jamie Frederick from Cadyville, Gabe Hynes from West Chazy, Johnna McDougal from Peru, Nathan, Zack and Michelle Myers from Mooers, Katie and Hannah Racette from Redford, and Nick and Zachary Roberts from Mooers Forks. They are joined by 11 more homeschoolers from Franklin County. The program runs for five consecutive Wednesdays, Jan. 24 - Feb. 21. Titus also hosts other homeschool groups on Tuesdays and Fridays. Twelve dollars pays for an all day lift ticket and a one hour lesson. Ski rentals are an additional six dollars a day, while snowboard rentals are $10. While some students like Jamie are learning to snowboard or ski for the first time, others have been participating for several years. According to Fran White, Tituss group coordinator, Titus has been offering a homeschool group package for about 20 years. I personally feel as a mother and grandmother that this is a good healthy place for kids to be, White said. It can also become a lifelong activity. We have people in their eighties skiing here regularly. I definitely want to continue snowboarding next year, Jamie commented. I like it a lot. It was hard at first but the lessons really helped me and my friends have really helped me. The friend component is the most important part for 10-year-old Abigail DAntonio who is just learning to ski. I really like the skiing, she said. But the best part is spending the day with my friends Johnna, Michelle and Hannah.
