Board approves bed tax dispursements

QUEENSBURY After much debate, the Warren County Occupancy Tax Committee submitted its recommendations to the Board of Supervisors during their last full meeting of the year. The state Association of Fire Chiefs had asked for $150,000 to help fund their activities during their three-day visit in June, but the committee was not willing to fund that much money. As much as they appreciate the number of people and income that the fire chiefs bring to the area, the committee has never awarded more than $50,000 - the amount that goes to Americade - to any one organization or event. They decided to stick with the $50,000 figure for the fire chiefs, asking the town and village of Lake George and other towns in the county that benefit from the event to commit to some funds for the fire chiefs. The committee made the following recommendations to the full board, which was passed unanimously: NYS Association of Fire Chiefs - $50,000; Adirondack Theater Festival - $15,000; Americade - $50,000; Albany Rods and Kustoms, for the Adirondack Nationals Car Show - $18,000; state Public High School Basketball Championships - $50,000; state Public High School Girls Volleyball Championships - $7,000; Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, for the Worlds Largest Garage Sale - $8,000; Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce, for the Lake George Restaurant Week, Canadian Visitor Program and North Country Holiday B&B - $40,000, with a stipulation that 1/3 would be returned if a bed and breakfast tour is not held; Lake George Venture Partners, LLC for the Northeast Womens Retreat and Expo - $20,000; LARAC for their June and fall festivals - $5,000; Northeast Winter Classic All Breed Dog Show - $3,000; Swim Lake George Association, for the swim marathon; $10,000 and for the Lake George Winter Carnival - $5,000. The total amount of occupancy tax money spent on tourism for 2008 is $281,000.
