Time to get fit in Chestertown

CHESTERTOWN Its official; Chestertown now has a gym. Panther Mountain Fitness opened this week in Chestertown, behind Adirondack Mountain Spirits. Owners Pam and James Masten started work on the building that once housed a cinder block business in October, renovating and installing equipment. The building has a narrow cinder block hallway almost all the way around it, an early attempt at geothermal heating and cooling, and the Mastens are hoping it works to keep their costs down. Panther Mountain Fitness has a large coed room, filled with weight machines, free weights, standing bicycles, treadmills and elliptical machines. Each has the Panther Mountain Fitness logo sewn onto it. Some women dont like the larger machines, Pam said. So we have a room just for women with hydraulic resistance machines. The womens room is equipped with a signal light that will alert women going through the circuit to move on to the next step. Its a 30 minute circuit, that leaves very little stiffness, she said. Its easy to use for all levels of fitness. All their equipment is American made. Thats very important to us, James said. We researched a long time before we found this company. He said they are hoping to find a salon person to do nails and other services for the center, and they already have a room for Jesika Beckler, a licensed massage therapist, available for massage. The center also offers a meeting room for area groups such as Weightwatchers, nutritionists or other groups, that will hold 15-20 people. The phone has been ringing off the wall, Pam said. They are offering several membership packages to the gym, and the phone number is 494-3030. Panther Mountain Fitness is open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. and closed Sunday. Pam said they may adjust their hours, based on usage, once the center is established.
