Chamber of commerce to offer construction industry outreach seminar

PLATTSBURGH The Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce will host a special two-day construction industry outreach seminar Tuesday, Feb. 5, through Wednesday, Feb. 6. The times for the classes are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 5 and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 6. Paul Wigger from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Bruce Gray from Landrock E&S Consulting and Greg Griffin from B-Lann Equipment will serve as presenters. The seminar will discuss a new law recently passed by New York State which deems any contract totaling $250,000 or more for construction, reconstruction, repair or maintenance the state or a municipality is involved in must require all laborers, workers and mechanics be certified. Certification requires the persons must complete OSHA 10-hour construction safety training by July 31. That goes for all workers who will be on the job, including those of any sub-contractors. The New York State Department of Labor is in charge of enforcing the new law. The two-day course will provide contracting personnel and individuals who are responsible for on-site contractors the basic knowledge and tools necessary to control hazards associated with construction. It covers OSHA policies, procedures and standards as well as safety and health issues. Topics to be covered include each section of the OSHA construction standards. Special emphasis is placed on those areas that are the most hazardous, using the OSHA standards as a guide. Immediately following the workshop portion of the day, an optional quiz will be offered to participants who wish to obtain a certification certificate. The service is offered at no additional charge. Advance registration is required due to limited space. Registration is $45 for Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce members and S90 for non-members. The cost includes a continental breakfast and lunch. For more information, contact the chamber at 563-1000 or visit their Web site at www.northcountrychamber.com . The seminar is part of a year-round series of workplace safety programs and services offered by the Plattsburgh-North Country Chamber of Commerce.
