Be the first to enjoy a champagne meatloaf celebration

LAKE GEORGE Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the Prospect Mountain Diner is getting ready to open again. The landmark diner burned down in May, and owner Art Leonhard said hed re-open, and its clear now that hes true to his word. Leonhard found a diner of similar style to the 1950s diner that stood for over 50 years from a company called Dinermite Diners in Atlanta, Ga. The diner arrived last week, and contractors have been working to get the diner open as soon as possible. The Prospect Mountain Diner was originally a Silk City, bullet-style diner, built in 1950. It has been a popular stop for locals and regulars alike since the 1960s. After the fire last May, the diner was sorely missed, and locals were out last week to watch the progress of the new diner. Leonhard said the diner will seat 60, and the kitchen will be in another structure, to be built as soon as possible. There will be no cooking in the diner, he said. The kitchen will be added on to the diner. He plans to open to the public in early February, or before if all goes well. Lake George Village Mayor Bob Blais said the diner has been a landmark in Lake George and has been missed. Judging by the amount of comments Ive heard from our citizens when it burned, it was missed by many individuals who relied on it to network, and share rumors, Blais said. Its been a big tooth out of the smile of the community, and judging by the number of people who showed up when it was delivered, Im hoping we can do something worthwhile when it opens. Blais had the idea of holding a lottery for the first 60 customers to be served when the diner reopens. I thought the Prospect Child and Family Center would be a good fit for the proceeds, he said. Well sell tickets for $10 each; two for $25 for a couple to win together. He said that the 60 winners will be chosen on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at the East Cove when there will probably be a more solid date for the reopening. Blais said as each name is drawn, it will be put on a stool or in a booth on a diagram of the new diner. The winners will be the first ones to go in and will become a part of history, he said. Well celebrate the opening with a champagne reception and a meatloaf and mashed potato dinner. Blais expects plenty of response to the lottery for seats. When I announced it, people were clamoring for tickets, and they hadnt even been printed yet, he said. Tickets for the first meal celebration at the new Prospect Mountain Diner are available at Duffys Tavern, Marios Restaurant, Fun World and the East Cove in Lake George and at Nemecs in Warrensburg.
