Support Shelburne Bay Assisted Living

To the Editor, As a member of the Shelburne Bay Assisted Living community I would like to voice my strong support for the proposed expansion of the present assisted living quarters. Because Shelburne Bay is a community that accepts individuals with special needs, my husband and I are able to live out our final years in a lovely apartment and a secure environment, rather than being isolated from one another. He needs nursing care and I am healthy. However, we were living over an hour from the nearest hospital , and his physician felt he should be in a nursing home. Many Vermonters live in isolated communities and nursing care is difficult to find. Whether it be an individual or a couple, Shelburne Bay Senior Living is a place that you can call home in the sense of feeling safe and well cared for. The need is great and the time is coming when we will be having many more couples such as my husband and I who need help. To keep putting off the decision to expand seems to make no sense when, as the saying goes, none of us are getting younger. We dont know when we need assisted care. A year ago my husband put up the Christmas tree. Now he is in a wheelchair. Please make it possible for others to live out their lives with dignity. The sadness of illness is a burden in and of itself but the burden can be lessened by a caring and skillful staff in an assisted living facility like Shelburne Bay Senior Living. Please listen to my plea. Anne W. Hayes
