Wildcats return veteran crew

SCHROON LAKE Theres reason for optimism for Schroon Lake girls basketball fans. The Wildcats return nine players, including all five starters and all their statistical leaders, from a year ago. Schroon Lake posted a 13-10 overall and 4-8 Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference record in 2006-07. But there will be one important new face. Carmine Decker will be the coach. The long-time championship boys coach will replace Jeff Cutting, who has stepped down after a long and successful stint on the bench. Our goals are to take each game one at a time, to improve with every game, to represent our school in a sportsman-like manner and to go as far as our ability will take us, Decker said. Jessica Mehm, Kathleen Decker and Savannah Clark all return at guard. Theyre joined by rookie Mindy Whitty. Decker led the Wildcats in assists last season with 6 a game, while Mehm topped the team in steals with 2 a game. Clark was a consistent scorer. Moriah Williams and Cara DeZalia return to the post for Schroon. Theyre joined by newcomer Lindsey Morrissey. Williams led the Wildcats in rebounding last winter with 6 caroms a contest. Ashley Whitty, Nicole Beers, Kiersten Langabeer and Emily Whitney are back at forward. New to the frontline is Tonya Tyrrell. Ashley Whitty topped Schroon in scoring last season with nearly 10 points a game. The league has excellent balance with several good squads, Coach Decker said. The MVAC champion and sectional champ will have to be playing their best come February. Were looking forward to an exciting season.
