Students examine lung damage by smoke

Team Odyssey students at Vergennes Union Middle School get a first-hand look at the damage smoking does to a persons lungs during a workshop lead by Melanie Clark of the Addison County Tobacco Control Roundtable. While playing a game of Tobacco Bingo, students learned how tobacco affects the body as well as the social, economic and environmental impacts of smoking. The simulated Smokers Lungs were donated to the Tobacco Roundtable in memory of John Young, a Shoreham resident who died this past year as a result of a smoking-related illness. The Smokers Lungs are just one of the many educational items purchased by the friends and family of John Young in the hopes that, through education, youth will choose not to smoke and if they already do smoke to quit.
