Sentinels have new look

TICONDEROGA The Ticonderoga girls basketball team will have an entirely new look this winter. The Sentinels will have a new coach and a new style. I think out team will be competitive this season, said Shelly Young, who is taking over as coach from long-time mentor Rick Smith. We lost a lot of size last year to graduation and will be relying on our speed and quickness more this season. We are looking to play an up-tempo game. A year ago Ti posted an 11-9 overall record and 9-7 mark in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference. Ti will rely on a quintet of veterans this campaign. Kate Huestis, who is an established point guard, and Sam Diehl return to the backcourt. Julie Thompson, who had some big games in the pivot last season, returns to give the Sentinels an inside presence at center. Juliann Mandy and Carly Tubbs return to the front court, although Tubbs is injured and will miss the early season. Rounding out the club are rookies Brittney LaVoie, Alex Smith and Chelsey Budwick at guard along with Jocelyn Barber, Samantha Sharrow and Jamie Patchett at forward. I look for our starting five of Julie Thompson, Katie Huestis, Sam Diehl, Juliann Many and Chelsey Budwick to lead the way, Young said. We also have strength and additional speed to come in off the bench. The girls are working well together and we have a great attitude going into the season, the coach concluded.
