Schroon Christmas

SCHROON LAKE The Schroon Lake Chamber of Commerce will host its 22nd annual Olde Thyme Christmas Celebration Dec. 8. Last years expansion of the program with the additions of live music at multiple locations and the Basket Raffle where an overwhelming success, bringing out hundreds of new participants to enjoy all the holiday cheer, said Patti Mehm of the chamber. This years program is shaping up to be even better. Adirondack singer/songwriter Roy Hurd will visit The Towne Store at 4 p.m., where he will sign autographs and CDs plus putting on a short acoustic performance. He will perform again in the evening at the Community Church. Hurds visit is sponsored by the the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks and a grant from the Decentralization Grant Program. Horse and wagon rides will also begin at 4 p.m. The official evening kick off will be at 5:30 p.m. with the town Christmas tree lighting at Glens Falls National Bank, the lighting of a memory tree and a Living Nativity Walk. Santa will arrive arrive at the Strand Theater at 6 p.m. and be available to greet children until 7:30 p.m. Throughout the evening there will be horse and wagon rides, face painting at the senior center, childrens crafts at The Towne Store, complimentary refreshments at Alpine Pizza and cookies and cocoa at the senior center. The Community Church will host four musical performances. Hurd will play at 6 and 7 p.m. Schroon lake Central School and Mountainside Christian Academy students will perform at 6:30 p.m. The Schroon Lake Community Choir will sing at 7:30 p.m. At 6:30 and 7:15 p.m, there will be shows at the Emporium, the Morningstar Bistro and The Towne Store. Bert Britt will perform at the Emporium and Riverside Reed will play at The Towne Store. The Morningstar Bistro act is yet to be named. The Basket Raffle will have a new larger location at the chamber of commerce office on Main Street, with tickets available beginning 10 a.m. on Saturday and continuing throughout the event. The drawing will beheld at 8 p.m. Last year the Basket Raffle raised $1,200 that was donated to the Lions Club Food Baskets, Schroon Lake Food Pantry and Christmas Express gifts for area youth. To cap off the evening, a Christmas movie will be shown at 8 p.m. at the Strand Movie Theater. Tickets are $5 each. There are still ideas formulating and concepts coming together, so come out and enjoy this festive holiday event, I am sure there will be an additional surprise or two, Mehm said.
