Moriah girls have high hopes

PORT HENRY This could be a special season for the Moriah girls basketball team. The Vikings return eight players, four starters and one of the sections top performers this winter. Leading the veteran Moriah squad will be point guard Kaylee Sprague. She led the team in scoring (14.9 ppg), rebounding (8 rpg), assists (2.5 apg) and steals (3.5 spg) last winter. Shes a two-time Champlain Valley Athletic Conference all-star and last season was named to the sixth team Class D all-state squad. Also returning to the back court are Jen Tesar, Mayumi Wagstaff-Blaise and Ciara Thompson, who is coming off a knee injury. Theyre joined by Kayla Gagnon and Sherrilyn Guffey. Kearstin Petro and Chelsea McKiernan return to their forward posts from a year ago. Each averaged 6 points a game, while McKiernan added 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.7 steals a contest. Also as forwards are returnee Brenna Schaefer and newcomer Kaycee Kolodzey. Courtney Waldron returns as the Vikings starting center. She was second on the team in rebounding last season with 7.5 a game. Ashleigh Allen will also man the post. Moriah was 6-14 overall and 5-11 in Champlain valley Athletic Conference play in 2006-07, but Coach Steve Pelkey expects better things this season. I look to continue improving as the year continues, Pelkey said. Defense has to be a strong focus this year as well as rebounding and cutting down on turnovers. I look to be a challenger for the (Section VII) Class D title if we can improve as much as I feel we are capable of. Sprague will get a lot of attention from opponents and fans, but Pelkey thinks the rest of the team will perform well. Kearstin Petro and Chelsea McKiernan return as starting forwards, he said. Both are capable of scoring in double digits and are capable defenders. Courtney Waldron returns as starting center, he added. Shes a very good defender and has worked on her offense.
