Christmas comes to the Forks

AU SABLE FORKS Santa Claus is coming to Au Sable Forks this Saturday. On Saturday, Dec. 1, Christmas in the Forks will take place. The holiday celebration marks its third year with expanded festivities including free movie screenings, visits with Santa, sleigh rides and a community tree lighting. It's a great feel-good event. It's an old-fashioned celebration, and the Revitalization Group is working toward creating an old-fashioned hometown image, and we think this sort of thing is a great way to promote that, said Sue Pulitzer, chair of the Au Sable Forks Revitalization Group, and one of the coordinators of the event. From noon-5 p.m., the Downtown Merchants will be holding a special promotion. People who make a purchase downtown are eligible to enter a raffle for a $100 cash prize. It's a little something to support the business - its a good way for people to come and visit places they haven't before, said Pulitzer. Activities for children and families begin at 4 p.m., with the return of a very old community tradition film screenings. The Au Sable Forks Fire Department is sponsoring the screening of two holiday movies for children at the newly renovated Hollywood Theatre. How the Grinch Stole Christmas, starring Jim Carrey, and a surprise film will be shown. Popcorn will be provided for free. Soda and candy will be available for purchase. The movies will be both be screened again at 7 p.m. At 6 p.m., the community tree will be lit at Clock Park. The blue spruce tree was donated by Jay resident Bob Torrance. Carolers will perform, and complimentary hot apple cider will be offered. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be the guests of honor. Santa will arrive via a horse-drawn sleigh. A surprise guest will perform the tree-lighting. From 6:30-7 p.m., horse-drawn sleigh rides will be offered. Santa will visit with children in the lobby of the Hollywood Theatre. Five local groups have joined together to sponsor the activities the Tree Committee, Au Sable Forks Revitalization Group, and Downtown Merchants, Au Sable Forks Fire Department and Au Sable Forks Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. This is the first time that everyone's worked jointly to do this, and we'd like to continue to do that in the future, said Pulitzer. We're hoping that everyone will have a good time, come to visit Au Sable Forks and see what a nice place it is to shop and celebrate, said Pulitzer. She added that it was the perfect chance for people to visit the renovated Hollywood Theatre, which opened earlier this year. Additionally, on Sunday, Dec. 2, there will be a breakfast with Santa for children of the Au Sable Forks Fire District from 9-11 a.m., sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary. Pancakes and sausages will be served. We're hoping that everyone will have a good time, come to visit Au Sable Forks and see what a nice place it is to shop and celebrate. - Sue Pulitzer
