Live concert to be broadcast on VPR

COLCHESTER -- The Vermont Youth Orchestra Association is pleased to announce that VYO principal horn player Katie Jordan was selected to perform on NPR's weekly radio program "From the Top" which will be taped before a live audience at the Chandler Music Hall in Randolph on Saturday, September 29 at 8:00 pm.

"From the Top" is one of NPR's most popular radio programs, reaching almost 750,000 listeners each week. It combines performances by America's most promising, young classical musicians with interviews and skits, hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O'Riley. "From the Top" is heard on Sundays from 5-6 pm on VPR Classical and 6-7 pm on VPR, in addition to 250 other radio stations from coast to coast.

Katie is one of two Vermont musicians who will perform on the program, which will also feature students from New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois. This episode will be broadcast on VPR in November. Vergennes Union High School senior Katie Jordan has been a VYO member for six years, having previously participated in both Vermont Youth Sinfonia and Vermont Youth Philharmonia.

Influenced by life in a musically oriented household, Katie's love of music began as a young girl attending concerts with her parents. In addition to rehearsing and performing with the VYO, she now participates in her school musicals and teaches the piano. During the summer, Katie attended the NSO/Kennedy Center Summer Music Institute in Washington, DC. She performed in two orchestras, a chamber ensemble and a brass quintet while working with instructors from the National Symphony Orchestra for three weeks. She will present the Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1 as a soloist in the VYO fall concert on September 23 at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts.

Katie's VYO experience is an emphatic "outstanding." From a musical perspective, she enjoys the challenge of technically difficult pieces and of learning performing skills from among the musical masters who have worked with the orchestra. Additionally, she has made long-lasting friendships with others who share her passion for classical music. For the future, Katie plans to study horn performance at college, ultimately making music her career. She resides with her family in Charlotte, where she studies the horn privately with instructor Alan Parshley.

Tickets for the performance at the Chandler Music Hall are $40 per person. Tickets are available now by calling 802-728-6464 or visiting www.chandler-arts.org . Information about "From the Top" can be found at www.fromthetop.org .
