Ti Middle School sets open house

TICONDEROGA Ticonderoga Middle School families can get a free dinner and a preview of the new academic year Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Thats when the school will hold a barbecue and open house.

Its the first time the school has held open house before school starts. Classes begin the next day, Thursday, Sept. 6.

Its going to be more like an orientation, explained Tina Russell, chairwoman of the Building Leadership Team committee that planned the event. We want parents and students to meet their teachers, learn about their classes and understand whats expected of them right from the beginning instead of three weeks into the year.

Hopefully it will relieve some of the anxiety of a new school year, too, she added, especially for the sixth graders who are new to the building.

Principal Bruce Tubbs said other schools have held successful open houses prior to the start of classes.

The open house is our version of the First Day/First Night celebration that schools are doing to welcome parents, students and community to the beginning of the school year, he said. It is our opportunity to start the year off with everyone on the same page working toward the same goals.

The event will begin with a barbecue 5-6 p.m. in the school cafeteria prepared by school staff and members of the Parent-Teacher Organization. Free to families, it will include hot dogs, chips and a drink.

Just outside the cafeteria a list of home base assignments will be posted so students can find out where they begin each day.

At 6 p.m. Tubbs will welcome students and parents and give a brief overview of the school. He will also preview the proposed $23.8 million building and renovation project.

The proposal calls for an addition at the high school, creation of new classroom space, moving administrative offices, improved parking and renovation of current facilities.
