Minerva sailing program hosts final race

MINERVA Windy conditions greeted the regatta participants at the Minerva lake sailing program on Aug. 15. In spite of the strong winds, none of the boats capsized. This in itself was a real credit to the young sailors.

The Sunfish race was first to start. Orange Fish with Stephanie Ovitt as skipper and Shannon Ovitt as crew had a strong start. Green Fish skippered by Iric Malikowski and crewed by Tal Vicario was second to cross the line with Blue Fish Skippered by Alex Ruzbacki and crewed by Daniel Dunbar followed in third place.

The strong and gusting winds made sailing upright the prime concern. Orange Fish was able to complete the course in a time of 21 minutes 50 seconds to claim first place while Green Fish finishing second with a time of 38 minutes 4 seconds. Blue fish was unable to finish the course due to the strong winds but was able to return to the beach unscathed by the ordeal.

The Little Bear Class sailed next with the same northwest winds making tacking very difficult. LaNota, Angela McCall skipper and Karissa Wright crew, was off and flying at the start. They maintained the lead all through the race and finished with the days fastest time of 17 minutes 51 seconds. Dally, Taylor Fieden skipper and Jesse Clum Crew, finished a close second with 19 minutes 37 seconds as their time. Freginald, Jonathan Ordway skipper and Zane Vicara crew, had a corrected time of 24 minutes 4 seconds, due to a 3 minute penalty imposed upon them for a technical infraction, finished third.

The Sailing program at Minerva Lake is made possible solely by volunteer service, organized by Ron Bruce of North Creek and supported by Gus Stewart, family and friends from Hewitt Lake. Bill Nickerson of Wevertown arrived mid-season and jumped right in, giving the students the benefit of his sailing experience while taking them out on Little Bear sloops. Race day volunteers included Hewitt Lake Club members, Gus Stewart, David Vicario, Blair Vicario, Tal Vicario, Rufus Vicario and John Wyman.

Thank you to all who volunteered their time and skill to make this a most successful sailing season. Special thanks to Emil and Lucy Nicolaysen for their generous donation to our sail locker! Persons interested in becoming part of this program for the 2008 season may contact Ron Bruce at 251-5900 or ronbruce@frontiernet.net .
