Chesterfield residents will soon be getting a knock on their door

CHESTERFIELD Chesterfield residents will soon be getting a knock on their door from Al Hachigian, Chesterfields animal control officer.

At the Chesterfield town board meeting in August, Hachigian announced plans for a dog enumeration, which would start by the end of summer.

Hachigian hoped the census would aid him in his job, and ensure the return of pets if they were found loose.

We have a rash of them running loose - we continue to pick them up, and they're unidentified. Once we capture them, what do we do with them? We have to take them to the pound, it's very traumatic to an animal. People don't realize this, said Hachigian.

Licensing costs range from $7.50-15, depending on the gender, and if the animal has been spayed or neutered. People with an unlicensed animal will have to pay an additional fee for animals found during the enumeration.

To get licensed, a dog must have a rabies shot. Licenses can be purchased at the town hall.

Hachigian hoped to enlist volunteers to help, since the process is very time consuming. For more information or to volunteer to help with the count, contact the town hall at 834-9041.
