Vermont bounced back on Saturday with a 5 - 2 win. Trailing 2 - 1 through seven the Lake Monsters scored twice in each of their final two at bats thanks to three wild pitches and a throwing error to pull out a huge 5 - 2 win. Catcher Sean Rooney led the Lake Monsters offense in this one by ripping two doubles in his four trips to the plate and he scored once. Edulin Abreu picked up the win in relief for Vermont. After relieving the starter Jordan Zimmermann Abreu pitched three innings diving up just one unearned run on five hits to improve to four and three on the year. Alberto Tavarez pitched a hitless eighth inning to earn his eighth hold of the year, before turning the ball over to Martin Beno who pickd up his second save by striking out the side in the ninth.
Then last Sunday Vermont looked like they would get a split. They held a slim 2 - 1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. But Vermont shortstop Daniel Lyons made a costly error allowing Lowells leadoff hitter Yamaico Navarro to reach first base. Navarro then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt delivered bt David Marks, and then to third when reliever Ryan Harrison served up a wild pitch, thus allowing him to score the tying when Rafael Cabreja hit a sacrifice fly to left. Then with one out in the bottom of the tenth inning with one out and the bases empty Carlos Fernandez-Oliva hit his first homerun of the year, a game winner to right center. Harrison fell to one and four with the loss, and Vermont loss sole possession of second place.
