WESTPORT - The Westport Fire Department is preparing to party.
The 2nd Annual Firemen's Field Day will take place at the Essex County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Aug. 25. The event will feature a parade, activities, food, and a community square dance. There is no entrance fee for any of the activities.
Irwin Borden, WFD's safety officer, is coordinating the event. "We're hoping for people to come out and have a good time, and offering an event that gets some involvement from folks," said Borden.
The day starts off with a parade at 11 a.m., which will start at the fairground and proceed to Ballard Park. The line up starts at 9:30 a.m., and other community members are welcome to participate. Prizes will be offered for entrants including best appearance, furthest traveled, oldest apparatus (fire department award). Borden said that 47 fire companies have been invited to the parade.
At the fairgrounds, the department will offer kiddie rides, games, and food. A silent auction, featuring items donated by local businesses, will also take place.
Lawn tractor and ATV pulls will start at 1 p.m. People seeking information on categories should contact Dennis Westover at 962-2868.
The day will also feature a lucky duck contest, with a grand prize of $250. People can purchase ducksone for $3 or two for $5from any fireman prior to the event, or during the day of Aug. 25.
The event will conclude with round and square dancing with Gary Finney from 5 p.m.8 p.m.
