To the Editor:
In Lou Varricchio's recent editorial (7/14/2007), he wants readers to think that Senate Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid is somehow implicated in the Jack Abramoff scandal. But it ain't so. Reid, like many Republican and Democratic lawmakers, has received legal lobbying contacts and contributions from Abramoff clients. This activity is completely unrelated to the scandal which sent Abramoff to jail for fraud, conspiring to bribe public officials and tax evasion. Reid had nothing to do with any of those crimes. But don't take my word for it. The Wall Street Journal ran an opinion column defending Reid written by the conservative "small government" think tank The Cato Institute. Unfortunately for pundits who are trying to make this into a bipartisan scandal, Abramoff was a Republican and so are all the people who have so far been charged or pled guilty, a rogues gallery that leads right into the Bush administration.
