Another Successful Heart Smart Series

PLATTSBURGH The Town of Plattsburgh held another successful CVPH Heart Smart Fun Run Series this summer, thanks to the last minute efforts of Saranac's Jim Medeiros.

Medeiros, who has been coaching cross country at Saranac High for about 18 years, called Plattsburgh State in late June to find out when the series would begin; for the past 5 years Plattsburgh State has hosted the event for CVPH. But Medeiros was informed that they could no longer host the event due to construction around the field house.

Medeiros hated to see this constructive event discontinued. "I just didn't want to see it go by the wayside. It was a lot of fun watching the young kids and families. I hated to see it not happen," he explained.

Medeiros called Mell DeFayette, the head of the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department, and let her know he was willing to host the event at the Cadyville Park. She mediated between Medeiros and CVPH.

"CVPH was thrilled that I was going to keep it going," said Medeiros. "And Mell has been great. Anything I needed she got for me."

The Heart Smart Series continued for 5 consecutive Wednesdays starting on July 11. Registration began at 5:30 and the runs began at 6.00. The family friendly event offered a 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, mile and 5k run.

Medeiros' family and friends helped make the series go off smoothly. They arrived early to set up the stakes and cones (provided by Gregory Supply) to mark the course. Joe Rush, Medeiros' assistant coach, and former Seton cross country coaches, Gayle and Jack Wilson, were on hand each night. Jack set up his digital finish clock(with 6 inch digits!) at the finish line. Gayle and Rush handed out ribbons and recorded the finishers names, ages, and finish times. Hannaford's provided ice pops and cups.
