PLATTSBURGH Last Sundays high winds, heavy snow and the resultant tree damage resulted in the blackout of 20,000 NYSEG customers in a four county area. NYSEG Regional Operations Manager Mark Leta said, Trouble started about 6 p.m. Sunday night when the snow started to accumulate. There were 15 to 18 inches of snow in parts of Essex County. The hardest hit areas were Peru, Schuyler Falls, Saranac, Keene, Jay and the Town of Chesterfield. As of 3 p.m. Monday, NYSEG still had 4,100 customers without service. Leta explained that the snow buildup resulted in broken limbs falling on power lines and blown power line fuses. The mutual aid procedure whereby power companies assist one another in case of emergencies was implemented. Approximately 100 personnel came from as far away as Buffalo, however, Leta said their arrival in our region was somewhat delayed because the storm was so widespread. Emergency crews cant leave their home area until the danger there has passed.
