PLATTSBURGH Yes, Virginia, there will be a Mayors Cup celebration in Plattsburgh this summer. Mayor Donald Kasprzak said there will be a lot of excitement in the downtown area and on the lake during the 2-day event being held in conjunction with the annual Mayors Cup sailboat regatta and other festivities being organized by the Sunrise Rotary. Kasprzak said three local bands, Lucid, Zip City and the North Country Horns were booked for the concerts, which were sponsored by Caldwell, Banker and Whitbeck Associates. This years Mayors Cup celebration is slated for July 6 and 7, with a parade, entertainment and vendors in Trinity Park. Fireworks will be held at Crete Civic Center this year as part of Kasprzaks plan to aggressively market and promote the City Beach area. Families can bring their lawn chairs and sit by the lake. I think it will be quite enjoyable. Im trying to make this a true community event. But the city cannot foot the entire bill, he said. We need volunteers, corporate sponsors and donations. I estimate that the cost will be in the ballpark of $30-40,000. The mayor said people had voiced their concerns about the negative impact should the event have been cut completely. I listened to those people, he added. I do agree that not having this event would hurt the City of Plattsburgh. We have gone back to a two-day event as it had been when it originated in the early 90s. Kasprzak said he was thankful to Media Central who had been contracted in years past to promote what went from a weekend to a nine-day event, commending them for still having a willingness to help by sharing past details with him. While the music and events will be free, there will be a $5 charge for parking during the fireworks. We need it to help with the cost of the fireworks, Kasprzak said. I will also be setting up a fund for future Mayors Cup events. Tell anyone interested in becoming a sponsor to contact me here at the Mayors office - Ill be more than happy to take their call!
