Adrienne Devino, age 18, of Addison, Vt., was killed while snowtubing on the slopes of Loon Mountain, N.H. March 30. She was with student members of the Northeastern University Resident Student Association where she served as a student-public relations officer. Devino was a 2006 graduate of Vergennes Union High School. As a student at VUHS, she received various academic and extracurricular honors; she was popular with students and faculty and served as her class president three years in a row. According to news reports, Devino was pronounced dead of internal injuries at Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, N.H. Northeastern spokesman Fred McGrail said Devino, a communications major, was one of about 50 students on the school-sponsored trip. While a student at VUHS, Devino was active in athletics and a prom queen during her junior year. James O'Brien, a Northeastern student with Devino, said they were tubing on an illuminated trail around 8 p.m. when Devino left the trail, struck an embankment and lost control of her tube. The trail was icy due to melting and freezing of snow the night before, according to eyewitnesses. More than 150 neighbors, friends and former VUHS classmates attended a memorial bonfire in Devino's memory March 31 in Addison. Adrienne loved the big city, but she was a country girl at heart, friend Pam Wheeler said. The Vergennes Seth Warner Chapter presented its 2006 Good Citizen Award to Devino. At the time, Devino was lauded for outstanding qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
