Simpson Cabinetry offers old-fashioned values of custom

SOUTH BURLINGTON Although the modest-sized shop on Shelburne Road has only been open for a relatively short time--since October 2005--the woodworking firm of Simpson Cabinetry has been a long-time dream of owner Bruce Simpson. Simpson first opened up shop in 2002 with a small location in the Old Railroad Building in Jonesville, Vt., south of Richmond. He found his current location close to the Shelburne town line on Shelburne road, and jumped at the great location. Only recently, an attractive store front sign was added out front that has already caught the eye of several passersby, said Bruce. The small business specializes in hand-crafted wooden furniture, and customer input is of utmost importance during the process. We encourage people to be a part of it, said Simpson. The customization of each piece to a particular house or customers tastes is his favorite part of the process. I love that part of it, he said, and to be a part of the project. The company buys most of their fine quality hardwoods from a lumber shop in Bristol, Vt. From there on, everything that can be customized will be made specifically for the piece and customer. We dont sub-contract, said Simpson. It truly is a custom-shop. The beauty of custom cabinetry, he explained is that you can make something that fits into an exact space, whereas if a customer buys something pre-made, it will generally be a standard size, such as a 12 or 24 inch cabinet--and will likely need an added filler in order to fit the space. For every job they do, Simpson said they visit the house to do their own measuring, and provide architectural drawings for each project. Because of the detail-oriented nature of the work, he said that the average kitchen installation may take between two and a half, and three weeks. Since moving locations, Simpson said the business has definitely expanded, with the biggest change being local builders knowing about the shop. As weve grown, weve gained a certain clientele of builders. If they want something tomorrow, we try to do that for them. And their products speak for themselves. Word of mouth is the best advertising, he said. As is the case with any satisfied professional, Simpson loves what he does. I love doing furniture, and making different pieces, he said.
