The Castleton State College womens lacrosse team is coming off their best season in more than 20 years. The Spartans earned the final spot in the NEWLA tournament, where they fell in the semifinal round. The team returns three all-conference members, including their top-two scorers from a season ago. The experience of last season, along with new leadership in head coach, Tammy Landon, and assistant, Emily Wiezalis should mix nicely with a strong incoming group of players to help propel the Spartans to another trip to the NEWLA tournament. Returning for her second season, after leading the team with 35 points, including 33 goals as a freshman will be Katelyn Greene. The midfielder was named NEWLA All-Conference Second Team as a freshman, and will provide speed and scoring to a strong midfield. Nicole Bouchard also was named as a second-team representative, after tallying 33 points on 29 goals and four assists as a sophomore attacker last season. Colleen Rupp anchors a strong Spartan defense as a senior captain and member of the 2006 NEWLA All-Conference First Team. Looking to contribute to the scoring effort in 2007 will be Alex Fleck who tallied 14 goals and four assists last season, and Erin Barry who tallied 10 goals and six assists. New to this years team will be several fresh faces, providing Castleton with depth it has not had in recent years. The Spartans have 12 new players on the current roster and will look to all of them to make an immediate impact in the advancement of the program. Castletons season opens March 17-18 when they travel to Ramapo College on Saturday and Dominican College on Sunday.
