Keene student to attend writer's conference

KEENE VALLEY A local student will participate in an event to hone her writing skills. Helen Lawrence, a junior at Keene Central School, has been selected to attend the New England Young Writers Conference, which takes place at Middlebury Colleges Bread Loaf Campus in Vermont. Its really an honor and Im really excited, said Lawrence. The conference brings together 200 dedicated young writers from throughout the New England and New York region to share manuscripts, attending readings by authors, and study craft-skills with a staff comprised of professional writers and college educators. She said she was looking forward to working with people from other schools who took writing seriously. Lawrence wrote a creative nonfiction piece about her mother to gain entrance. It was the openness of her piece when she first showed it to me, I knew. Her voice captured the experience very well, said English teacher Joy McCabe. The writers conference takes place from May 17-29.
