Cinco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 Battle of Puebla in which the Mexican army under General Ignacio Zaragoza successfully defended the capital of Mexico City by defeating the French Army. The victory at Puebla showed the rest of the world the Mexican people would defend their country against foreign forces and strengthened Mexico as a country, furthering President Benito Juarez’s progressive legal reforms. “Batalla de Puebla” symbolizes Mexican unity and patriotism.
