PERU — Jackie Madison, president of the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association, uses her own family to illustrate the African American journey from the time of President Lincoln to the era of President Obama.
She traces her family from slavery in South Carolina, and the farm her ancestor was able to buy after the Civil War, through the Jim Crow decades in the South, to the Civil Rights movement led by Martin Luther King, Jr., to the present day.
From Slavery to Citizenship: One family's story of the impact of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barack Obama on ordinary African Americans," will be presented at 5 p.m., Sunday, March 24 at the Peru Free Library, with Free admission.
