CATS Earth Day hike

Champlain Area Trails (CATS) is celebrating Earth Day on Saturday afternoon, April 20 at 12:30 p.m. by hosting a “pick-up sticks hike” on the new Field and Forest Trail between Wadhams and Whallonsburg.
“We created the trail when snow covered all the fallen sticks and branches,” said Chris Maron, executive director of CATS. “Now that the snow has melted, we’ll hike the trail, pick up the sticks and cut the little ‘nubs’ of already-cut saplings so people don’t trip on them. This will be a great project for families so we are looking forward to seeing people of all ages out on the trail.”
Volunteers will meet in Wadhams at the Dogwood Bakery and can take part in all or part of the project which will end about 4:30 p.m. Please wear gloves; useful tools will be loppers and hand saws; CATS will also provide tools.
The Field and Forest Trail is part of the trail system CATS is developing to link the Champlain Valley communities, connect people with nature, and promote economic vitality. It is an important link in the trails system that will go between Westport and Essex.
Volunteers maintain the CATS trails, enabling residents and visitors to enjoy the amazing Champlain Valley environment. For more information, call 962-2287 or go to www.champlainareatrails.com.
