“The Cards” and Fireworks– A great deal on deck at Veterans’ Memorial Field, Athol
On Monday, July 2 at 7 p.m., the town of Thurman kicks off its 2012 free Concerts and Market in the Park at Veterans’ Memorial Field, Athol, with The Cards, Frank Orsini (fiddle), Don Young (guitar) and Dean Schermerhorn (piano, bass) and Lane Schermerhorn (drums). These musicians are the real deal; together and separately, they have delighted audiences for years with their performances in such groups as “Adirondack Gold”, “Whipper-Snappers”, the “Upstate Bluegrass Band”, “Johnny and the Thurmites”, “Annie & the Hedonists” and more. They play a variety of styles, shuffling up traditional American, Canadian and European instrumental tunes with pop and swing standards, and some country favorites. The long experience of the players offers many combinations of instrumentation, and vocal renditions of well-known and seldom-heard musical selections; fun and dance tunes are their strong suit. As an ensemble, they’ll knock your socks off, and organizers predict a full house. Want more? We’ll sweeten the pot: Fireworks will be launched at the concert’s conclusion, about 9.
Light refreshments will be available from the Thurman Volunteer Fire Company, and an informal market with local wares will be held. Guests may wish to bring folding chairs and wear layered clothing for changeable mountain weather. The concert and fireworks are presented free by the Town of Thurman using Warren County occupancy tax money. For the full summer concert lineup, visit PersisGranger.com or call 518-623-9649. Free concerts continue every Monday through July and August.
Veterans’ Memorial Field is at 311 Athol Road, Athol, and is about six miles from Northway exit 23 via route 418, and from The Glen via Glen-Athol Road. Watch for banners with arrows.
